The City of Fairfax Commission for Women has recently announced Lorraine Koury and Kelly O’Brien as the recipients of the prestigious 2024 Women of Influence award, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the Fairfax community.
Lorraine Koury, a dedicated city resident for 16 years, has played a pivotal role in advocating for transparent, free, and fair elections within Fairfax City. Her tenure on the City of Fairfax Electoral Board from April 2018 to December 2020 marked her as the first woman in nearly two decades to serve in this capacity. Beyond her official duties, Koury’s commitment to democracy is evident in her volunteering as a poll watcher and her professional work as an attorney specializing in divorce law. Notably, she contributed pro bono services to the landmark case United States v. Commonwealth of Virginia, addressing discrimination against individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Kelly O’Brien, another esteemed city resident of 13 years, has been an instrumental force in fostering community spirit and engagement. Her active involvement spans various facets of city life, including serving on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Old Town Fairfax Business Association board of directors. O’Brien’s dedication extends to her volunteer work for city and community events, alongside managing a community Facebook page that keeps residents informed about Fairfax City news and updates. Her professional contributions include her current role as the Town of Vienna’s deputy director of Planning and Zoning, further highlighting her commitment to community development.
The community is invited to celebrate the achievements of these remarkable women at the 2024 Women of Influence award ceremony, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the Fairfax City Hall Council Chambers. This award, initiated in 2020 by the Commission for Women, aims to honor and celebrate women who have made a significant impact on the lives of residents in Fairfax City, highlighting their contributions and leadership in enhancing the community’s quality of life.
