Starting Monday, Oct. 28, the City of Fairfax Police Department will roll out a new eight-week pilot program using private security to enhance safety in the Old Town commercial district and city parks. The effort, which runs through Dec. 22, aims to increase visibility and deter crime in these busy areas.
Partnering with Alpha Security, a private firm already contracted by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, the program will deploy unarmed, uniformed guards to patrol the Old Town area and select parks on a set schedule. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, guards will walk the Old Town commercial district, while from 3 to 8 p.m. daily, they’ll patrol Stafford Drive Park and Draper Drive Park.
The guards will focus on foot patrols, engaging with local businesses, and serving as a visible crime deterrent. They will be in direct communication with city police to alert officers if enforcement is needed. At the end of the pilot, officials will review the program’s impact and decide if the extra security should be made permanent.
