It was a tense scene early this morning on I-66 eastbound near Nutley Street, where a single-vehicle crash left one person trapped and another thrown from the car.
Units from the City of Fairfax and Fairfax County were on the scene quickly. Fire and rescue crews arrived to find the vehicle flipped over. One person was already outside the wreck, but another was still trapped inside.
City of Fairfax Fire and Rescue crews, including RE433 and FE403, responded immediately. One team started cutting the car open to reach the trapped person. Another pulled a hose line in case fire became a risk. Paramedics from M403 and M433 provided advanced life support, going as far as administering blood at the scene.
Fairfax County’s Ambulance 413 and Engine 413 stepped in to help treat the second patient, while Battalion Chief 443 took command of the operation.
Thanks to the combined efforts of city and county crews, the trapped patient was safely pulled from the vehicle. Both individuals were taken to Fairfax Hospital for further medical attention.
The response was a good example of the kind of coordination that can save lives when every second counts.
